Pastel-coloured Riess enamel cookware on a light kitchen worktop: pots, oven dishes, jugs and bowls

Riess enamel from Ybbsitz

Riess has been making enamel cookware in Ybbsitz, Austria, since 1922.

Depending on the piece, Riess leaves a small spot without enamel on the inner rim or handle. The metal is visible there, and there is a reason for it.

How the spot is formed

Riess describes the moment like this: the steel sheet has just been coated with enamel slip, a finely ground glass mixture, either by dipping or by hand spraying. It hangs on a hook to dry, on the inner rim or handle. No glass adheres there. Then, in the kiln at around 850 degrees, the glass and steel fuse into one material, leaving the metal exposed where the hook was attached.

This spot is called a contact point. There is also the seam, a fine line where a handle has been welded on, and the open edge, where the metal is exposed. According to Riess, none of these three are defects, but traces of the journey from sheet metal to pot.

This pair also comes from our orders: customers most often choose the matching lid with the schnitzel pan.
