How to recognise good coasters
- Material: Untreated virgin wool is naturally heat-resistant, water-repellent and dirt-repellent — with no additional impregnation needed.
- Thickness and density: Densely felted wool provides good insulation and protects delicate surfaces such as oiled wood or stone.
- Size: Small coasters are sufficient for cups and glasses; for pans and baking dishes, use a large trivet such as the Béla.
- Feel: Felt stays firmly in place, cushions the sound of putting down dishes and protects both the tabletop and the base of the pan.

How to care for felt properly
Wool saves you plenty of work: usually, all you need to do is shake out the coaster and leave it to air. Simply brush off crumbs, and dab stains with a damp cloth and a little mild wool detergent. Felt should not go in the washing machine, however — it may lose its shape and shrink.
Are felt coasters heat-resistant?
Yes. Virgin wool felt withstands the heat from pans, frying pans and pots while providing insulation — so the heat does not reach your tabletop in the first place. That’s why felt trivets are a durable alternative to plastic and cork.
How do I clean a felt coaster?
Air it, brush it off and dab stains with a damp cloth — that’s usually all it needs. As the wool repels dirt and water, spills do not soak in straight away.
