01 / PACKAGING LICENCE
Der Grüne Punkt
According to its own information, Der Grüne Punkt established a dual system for recovering sales packaging. In many countries, the mark is used to indicate funding for packaging recycling.
It shows that a licence has been paid for the packaging. It is not a product label and says nothing about how the product was made or what it contains.
There is a certification standard called “Plastic Free”. Control Union describes it as a framework ensuring that products are free from components made from fossil-based plastic.
If “Plastic Free” appears on a product without a certifier or number being named, it is a claim made by the manufacturer. Without a number, we cannot look it up.
This often means that emissions have been offset through climate protection projects. That is compensation, not a property of the product.
Under Directive (EU) 2024/825, such claims must not be based solely on offsetting emissions outside the value chain. The rules apply from 27 September 2026. Taiga does not show “carbon neutral” as a criterion in the module.
No. A label indicates that a product, raw material or company met the issuer’s criteria at a particular point in time. This applies only to the part for which it was awarded and only for as long as the certificate remains valid. The label says nothing beyond that.
Who checks the assessors?
It depends on the label. Some issuers work with independent, authorised certification bodies. Fair for Life refers to audits conducted under ISO 17065. Cradle to Cradle Certified states that it has been recognised by the ANSI National Accreditation Board as an environmental label under ISO 14024. For other labels, we do not yet know. In those cases, the card says “not yet assessed”.
What does register mean?
A register is a public list maintained by the issuer where you can check who holds a certificate. You enter a company or certificate number and see whether the certificate is valid. Not every label has a public register. Where we know a link and it was accessible, it is shown on the card.
What does “Certificate checked” mean in the module?
We checked the issuer’s register or used the certificate number to confirm that the certificate exists and applies to the product or brand. This is different evidence from a manufacturer’s statement. The module lists the two separately.
Why does Taiga show a “being assessed” label?
Because the label is mentioned but has not yet been checked. This may mean that it is not yet included in our label library, or that the register or certificate number is missing. A label being assessed is visible in the module but does not count as verified evidence.
Why are some fields empty on certain cards?
We only enter information that we have found in an issuer’s source or in our label library. Where we have not yet been able to do this, it says “not yet checked”. This does not mean that the information does not exist.
What is the difference between product, raw material and company labels?
A product label applies to the item you are buying. A raw material label applies only to one part of it, such as wood, cotton or rubber. A company label applies to the business and its processes. It does not describe the properties of an individual item. The card states the scope.
Is a company certificate evidence for the product?
No. In the module, company certificates do not count as evidence for the product. They are listed separately because they provide information about the organisation, not about the individual item.
Does “vegan” say anything about the environment?
No. Vegan means that no animal-derived ingredients are included. The Vegetarian Society states itself that its marks concern suitability for a particular diet and are not environmental or CO₂ certification. The same applies to marks indicating that no animal testing has been carried out.
What does “climate neutral” mean on a product?
