How to recognise good plant hair colour
When buying plant hair colour, it’s worth looking out for a few key points:
- Plant-based formula: Genuine plant hair colour consists of ground dye plants. It doesn’t lighten the hair, but coats it with colour pigments – so the result always depends on your starting colour.
- Choose your shade based on your starting colour: Choose a target shade that matches the depth of your natural colour or is darker. A strand test on an inconspicuous section shows you in advance how the shade will look on your hair.
- Preparation: Residues from silicones or styling products can prevent the colour from taking evenly. A preparatory treatment such as khadi Color Prep creates a clean base.
- Mix fresh: Plant hair colour comes as a powder that is mixed with warm water and used straight away – this allows the pigments to develop their full effect.

How to achieve good results with plant hair colour
Mix the powder with warm water to make a spreadable paste and apply it promptly to towel-dried hair. Leave the colour to develop for the desired intensity, then rinse it out thoroughly. It’s important to know that the final shade continues to develop during the first few days after application – so don’t assess the result immediately after rinsing. Can I use plant hair colour to make my hair lighter?
No. Plant hair colour contains no lightening agents – it coats the hair with colour pigments rather than altering its natural pigmentation. You can deepen your shade, make it warmer or build up shine, but you can’t go lighter than your starting colour.
Does plant hair colour cover grey hair?
Grey hair takes up the plant pigments, but often appears slightly lighter than the rest of the hair – similar to natural highlights. With repeated use, the colour builds up further and the result becomes more even.
What do I need Color Prep for?
Color Prep prepares your hair for plant colour: it removes residue so the pigments can take evenly. This step is particularly useful when using plant hair colour for the first time or after using styling products containing silicones.
