Recycling im Haushalt – Machst du diese fatalen Fehler?

Recycling at Home – Are You Making These Fatal Mistakes?

Recycling is an important contribution to climate protection and resource conservation. Unfortunately, many of us still make mistakes in waste separation, which make efficient recycling difficult. In this blog post in the Taiga Newsroom you will learn about common waste separation mistakes and how to avoid them. We will also show you how you can optimize recycling through simple changes in your household .

We also introduce you to sustainable products from the Taiga Store that will help you to separate your waste better and dispose of it in an environmentally conscious way. With our tips and the right products, you can reduce your ecological footprint and make an active contribution to climate protection.

What is recycling?

Recycling is the process of reusing waste and used materials and processing them into new products. It is a central component of waste management and environmental protection, as it helps to conserve resources, reduce energy consumption and reduce environmental pollution. Instead of simply throwing away materials such as paper, glass, plastic or metal, they are collected, sorted and reprocessed so that they can be reintroduced into the production cycle. Recycling helps to reduce the need for new raw materials and at the same time reduce waste in landfills.

How does recycling work?

Recycling not only saves valuable resources, but also reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions. According to calculations by the Öko-Institut , several million tons of CO2 equivalents are saved annually in Germany through the recycling of packaging from the yellow bin, glass, as well as paper, cardboard and carton.

The recycling process begins in your household with correct waste separation. Here are some important points to consider when recycling:

  1. Separate packaging by material type.
  1. Remove coarse food residues, but do not rinse packaging separately.
  1. Disassemble packaging into its individual parts, if possible.
  1. Do not stack packaging inside each other.

Only if waste is sorted correctly can it be processed and recycled efficiently in the sorting plants.

Why is correct waste separation so important?

You may be wondering why it is so important to avoid these mistakes. The answer is simple: the better we pre-sort our waste, the more efficiently recycling plants can work. Good waste separation is the first essential step towards high-quality recycling  of as much packaging waste as possible.

Proper recycling can recover valuable resources from packaging. These can then be used for new packaging or other products, which consumes fewer resources and is good for the climate.

The Central Agency Packaging Register states a recycling rate for plastic packaging of 65.5% for 2021. This shows that recycling works, but there is still room for improvement.

Waste separation mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes in recycling is incorrect waste separation. Many people are unsure which bin to put which waste in. This leads to up to 40 percent of waste in yellow bags and yellow bins not belonging there. At the same time, too much packaging still ends up in residual waste instead of being recycled.

Here are some common waste separation mistakes:

  • Pizza boxes in waste paperAlthough cardboard normally belongs in the blue bin, pizza boxes are an exception. They are often contaminated with grease and food residues and therefore cannot be recycled.
  • Drinking glasses and flower vases in the waste glass container: These items actually belong in residual waste, as they can contaminate waste glass during melting.
  • Plastic items in the yellow bin: Many people think the yellow bin is for everything made of plastic. In fact, it is only for sales packaging. Broken toys, toothbrushes or plastic drinking cups belong in residual waste.

To avoid these mistakes, it is important to inform yourself about proper waste separation. For example, yogurt cups, plastic bottles for detergent or shampoo, beverage cartons, and non-returnable cans and beverage cans belong in the yellow bin

Unclean packaging

Another common mistake is disposing of unclean packaging. Many people believe that they need to rinse food packaging thoroughly before disposing of it. However, this is a myth!

In fact, it is not necessary to rinse yogurt cups or other packaging before disposing of them. They are cleaned anyway in the recycling process. It is sufficient to make the packaging "spoon-clean", i.e. to remove coarse food residues.

However, it is important to note that heavily soiled packaging, such as greasy pizza boxes, does not belong in waste paper. These can disrupt the recycling process and should be disposed of in residual waste.

Non-disassembled packaging

An often-overlooked mistake in recycling is not disassembling packaging. Many people throw away packaging as it is, without disassembling it into its individual parts. However, this can cause problems in recycling.

Here are some examples of this mistake:

  • Undisclosed yogurt cups: Yogurt cups are often made of plastic, while their lids are made of aluminum. Both materials should be thrown separately into the yellow bin or the recycling bag. If they remain connected, the scanner in the recycling plant cannot correctly identify the material.
  • Stacked plastic cups: To save space, many people stack cream and yogurt cups inside each other. However, this causes problems for recycling plants, as only the outer material is recognized. It is better to throw the cups loosely into the bin.
  • Packaging with different materials: For packaging consisting of several materials, it is helpful to separate them as much as possible. For example, for a plastic yogurt cup, the lid should be removed and any paper sleeve removed. The paper sleeve then goes into the waste paper.

To facilitate recycling, it is important that you disassemble packaging into its individual parts as much as possible before disposing of it. This enables better sorting and more efficient recycling.

Tips for better recycling

To improve your recycling, here are some practical tips:

  1. Inform yourself: Familiarize yourself with the recycling rules in your community. There are often local differences.
  1. Separate correctly: Sort your waste carefully into the correct containers.
  1. Disassemble packaging: Separate different materials from each other before disposing of them.
  1. Avoid contamination: Remove coarse food residues, but do not rinse packaging separately.
  1. Reduce waste: The best way is to avoid waste from the outset.
  1. Use sustainable products: Use reusable containers and products to reduce packaging waste.

Remember: Each of us can make a difference. By correctly separating and recycling our waste, we actively contribute to environmental protection and help conserve valuable resources.

Waste separation in detail: How to sort correctly

An important part of recycling is correct waste separation, as only cleanly sorted waste can be efficiently processed further. Incorrect separation can significantly hinder or even prevent the recycling process. Here is an overview of which waste belongs in which bin and how to avoid typical mistakes to reduce your ecological footprint.

Yellow Bag / Yellow Bin

The Yellow Bag or Yellow Bin is intended for light packaging made of plastic, aluminum, tinplate, and composite materials such as beverage cartons. Here are some examples of what belongs in it:

  • Yogurt cups (without lid)
  • Plastic bottles (e.g., for dish and laundry detergent)
  • Cans
  • Beverage cartons

Important: Yogurt cups and other packaging do not need to be rinsed. It is sufficient if they are "spoon-clean". For combinations of different materials, such as yogurt cups with aluminum lids, separate the components if possible. In some regions, there are also recycling bins where, in addition to packaging, other plastic or metal items such as broken pans or plastic toys can be disposed of.

Paper waste

All types of paper, cardboard, and carton belong in the paper bin:

  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Books and brochures
  • Wrapping paper
  • Paper packaging (e.g., flour and sugar paper bags)

Note: Heavily coated papers such as baking paper or to-go cups do not belong in waste paper, but in residual waste or the yellow bin. Fold cardboard packaging to save space and collect more paper.

Organic waste

The organic waste bin is intended for organic waste from the kitchen and garden. Since 2015, all municipalities have been obliged to offer their citizens the opportunity to collect organic waste in a separate bin. The organic waste bin includes:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Coffee grounds and tea filters
  • Food scraps (even cooked)
  • Garden waste such as leaves and grass clippings

Avoid plastic bags in the organic waste bin; even biodegradable plastic bags are problematic. Use paper bags or wrap moist waste in newspaper.

Residual waste

All waste that cannot be recycled and does not contain pollutants belongs in the residual waste bin:

  • Hygiene articles
  • Vacuum cleaner bags
  • Cigarette butts
  • Porcelain and ceramics

Note: Electrical appliances, batteries, and energy-saving lamps do not belong in residual waste. They must be disposed of separately to recover valuable raw materials and dispose of pollutants properly.
